Tamia Washington was born on May 9, 1976 in the projects of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Tamia was born to a seventeen year old mother, and growing up; she rarely saw her father. By age six, the singer began singing in her local church’s choir. She soon became interested in singing, dancing, and acting. As she grew older, she performed in local theatrical presentations. In 1993, Tamia won the YTC Vocal Achievement Award. In 1994, she won the Steve Ross Music Scholarship Award at the American Academy Annual Salute to excellence. That same year, the young singer attended a party held by her manager, Brenda Richie, for singing sensation, Luther Vandross. While at the party, Tamia met singer, Quincy Jones. Jones immediately realized the young star’s talent and had her sing, “You put A Move on My Heart,” which he put on his new album, Q’s Jook Joint.
