Puddle of Mudd consists of Wesley Reid Scantlin (guitar/vocals), Paul James Phillips (guitar), Douglas John Ardito (bass), and Greg David Upchurch (drums). Prior to getting together, the members had different jobs. Scantlin used to be a construction worker, cook, and dish washer. Phillips used to be a manager at a local record store. Ardito used to be a pizza delivery boy and a bassist for a band called Cellophane. Upchurch used to be a dish washer, house painter, and he was in a band with Sound Garden’s Chris Cornell called Eleven.

Puddle of Muss is unique because it was not formed by four best friends who were playing music for a long time. The group originally stemmed from Kansas City. They decided to name themselves Puddle of Mudd because the river next to their recording studio flooded one night after large rainfall.
