Pat Green was born in San Antonio, Texas but grew up in Waco, Texas. As a child, his actor father always influenced his son to pursue a career in music. When he was eighteen, Green attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. The singer then began writing his own songs and performing. He soon received a large audience and began the favorite opening act for big acts such as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Jerry Jeff Walker, Jack Ingram, Robert Earl Keen, and Jackopierce. By the mid 1990s, the singer borrowed some money from his parents in order to launch his own label, Greenhorse. In 1998, Pat Green released his debut record on his label. The album was called Dancehall Dreamer. Green’s sophomore album was called Live At Billy Bob’s Texas. In 2001, the singer released Songs We Wish We’d Written.
