Nothing
in
a
Box
I have a box
And inside are fragments
Tiny bits of someone that each become nothing on their own
Painstakingly, I build one upon another
Pieces that might fit
Intellect, influence, creativity, passion, compassion, candor, cynicism
And at the base I put loyalty and devotion and I build from there
Fears, dreams, love, hate, arrogance, humility
And as the structure begins to take shape
I recognize the hundreds of fragments as a whole
And for better or worse, I claim it as my foundation
But it's rickety and it sways heavily
Its stability undermined by holes
Where fragments like hope, faith and especially peace should be
It rocks violently against manic winds and it heaves under sickening depression
But still it stands
Until I try to hang a soul in it
Then it crumbles into the hundreds of pieces of nothing
Back into the box
... so at the base, I start with loyalty and devotion.
