IOLANTA The Last opera by Tchaikovsky “Iolanta” is one of his brightest and vital compositions. It is based on the play “King Rene's Daughter” by a Danish dramatist Henrik Hertz. It is a novella about a blooming flower – the all-conquering love of a girl and the joyful perception of the beauty of existence. The pure and sublime image of the main heroine is performed by Tatiana Lavrova. Her voice conveys the insight and healing love of Iolanta. Robert, performed by Sergei Shaposhnikov, is fair and passionate in the opera’s most popular aria - “Is there anyone who can match my Mathilda?” The orchestra, conducted by Eduard Grikurov, is distinguished by unusual delicacy and richness of color. The woodwind section sounds especially dim and “cold” during the opera's introduction, immersing the listener into the atmosphere of dreary darkness according to the author’s intention.
