It started one day in gymnastics class. Mercedes Lander, still in high school, met Fallon Bowman incidentally. Both were into the same music: Nirvana, Silverchair, Pink Floyd, etc. and wanted to be in a rock band. They began to play Nirvana songs in a garage, when eventually they teamed up with Mercedes' sister Morgan, who had a gifted and talented voice. By the time they found bassist Talena, Kittie had been set in stone. They became a hit at their high school, in which at the time, pop acts like Britney Spears were getting big. The members of Kittie strayed from the pop crowd, they knew they were all for the heavy metal. By January of 2000, their debut album Spit was released from their Canadian label, Ng Records. The songs involved hate, betrayal, rape, suicide, and other gritty themes the girls had encountered at some point in their lives.
