PROGRAM NOTES Antonin Dvorák is best known for his large scale symphonies and concerti. His songs with piano are less popular and yet he composed them throughout his life. The Bible Songs and Moravian Duets are often heard. The present collection focuses on least familiar vocal repertoire and are here sung in their original languages. Dvorák’s German publisher Simrock asked the composer to provide him with German translations of all the songs for publication. Indeed, some were actually composed in German, but the majority began life as Czech folk lyrics. Rather than turn to the verses of Goethe and Heine, Dvorák preferred rustic Slavic poetry.
