Fountains of Wayne was created by singer/songwriter duo Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood in 1986 when the two were attending the prestigious Williams College in Massachusetts. The duo teamed up after the realization that they both shared a common love fore British Melodic Pop/Rock. Soon after getting together, the two created their debut LP under the group name, Pinnwheel. Unfortunately, the album was never released due to legal troubles. The duo soon split up and began working independently. Schlesinger moved to New York City and joined the band, Ivy. Meanwhile, Collingwood remained in Boston and joined the group, Mercy Buckets. In 1996, however, the duo reunited. They decided to name themselves Fountains of Wayne after a New Jersey gift shop. In 1996, FOW released their self-titled debut LP on Atlantic Records. In 1997, Schlesinger received acclaim for his penning the song “That Thing You Do,” for the Tom Hank’s film with the same title.
