Echoes of Silence originally started in 1998 under the name of Dark Divinity. Drawing from the influences of early black metal bands and romantic/baroque classical composers such as Frédéric Chopin, Claude Debussy and Nicolò Paganini. Dark Divinity eventually faded out and died in early 1999 due to constant loss of members. So Mortis decided to lead his project on while still playing in his main project at the time which was Mournful Silence. So in 1999, Mortis of Mournful Silence quit and made Echoes of Silence his main project (leading on what was left of Dark Divinity). Many things were looking bad at that time but it was as if he avoided them all. Soon after the leave of his former band, the members of Mournful Silence split up and went their separate ways. In late 1999, Mortis later changed his identity to Leviticai and the band's name to Echoes of Silence as a symbol of new things to come and around that time he also changed his sound.
