Chris Cagle was born in Louisiana, but when he was only four years old; his family moved to the outskirts of Houston, Texas. When he was six, Cagle began playing the guitar, but he quite less than a year later. It was not until high school when he began learning the instrument again. Also while in high school, Cagle focused on singing, and he learned the piano. He then became a student at University of Texas at Arlington. In 1994, when Cagle was only 19 he dropped out to move to Nashville, Tennessee in order to pursue a music career. During this time, the singer also had various jobs in order to make enough money to survive: construction work, bartending, caddy. One night, while he was bartending, Cagle offered to pay the tab for a customer who had forgotten his wallet. The customer ended up being the credited Nashville songwriter, Harlan Howard.
