A member of the second wave (first wave being Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson) of Detroit techno masters, Carl Craig is in my opinion, the most lasting and constantly innovative of the group. To my knowledge, his first release came in 1989 under the moniker Psyche. Since then he has released works under the names of 69, Paperclip People, Innerzone Orchestra, and of course Carl Craig. Additionally he has worked with countless other artists as a collaborator/muse and founded the record label Planet E. Craig's influences include such artists as Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, the Detroit soul/funk sound, the geniuses of jazz, and obviously his predecessors in the techno movement - specifically Derrick May. His most revealing works are probably 'More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art' - an intensely melodic, lush techno-soul brainstorm, and 'Programmed' (as Innerzone Orchesta) - my personal favorite, which I feel picks up the mantle of such geniuses as Herbie Hancock an... |
