About The Record A Tribute To The South American Masters is to follow up to the Vancouver based multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and performer Bill Runge’s 2003 recording Acid Test. Inspired by the music of Runge’s favorite South American composers this is much more than a labour of love.
The album opener, “Sombrio”, is dedicated to Antonio Carlos Jobim and is an homage to his collaboration with Stan Getz and Astrid Gilberto in the mid sixties that brought the Bossa Nova craze to North America. Similarly, “Just Thinking” is dedicated to Brazilian singer/songwriter Milton Nasciemento and American composer Wayne Shorter for their collaboration on the recording “Native Dancer” while “Coro” is Runge’s take on the Brazilian pianist/guitarist and composer Egberto Gismonti’s piece “Loro”. Originally commissioned by The Hard Rubber Orchestra, “Amoroso” is dedicated to Argentinian bandoneonist and composer Daniel Binelli and “Astor” is dedicated to none other than Arg...
