The band was formed by Ryan Early (vocals/guitar) and Nicole Sestito (drums) under the moniker Hollow Point in the summer of 2002 as a way to mess around and write music. As the summer months came to a close, John DeAngelo (guitar) was drafted into the band, and a song entitled "Point of Contact" was written. The name was later changed to "Dressed in Black".
By the beginning of the new year, the band had recruited a second guitarist, Danielle Gambardella, to fill Ryan's spot at guitar. Within several months, three new songs had been written, "Pledge Your Allegiance", "Sin America", and "Anything to Belong", and the band named had been changed to Corporal Downfall.
In the final months of winter, Ryan and John got together to record a simple demo with a drum machine and one or two guitar tracks. This became the infamous Black Winter demo.
