Alice in chains was the \\\"heavy\\\" grunge band of the 90\\\'s. The band had a metal-grunge appeal that seperated them from all other Seattle based bands. Layne Staley formed the original band while in high school. Layne met Jerry Cantrell in 1987 at a rehersal studio called the Music Bank. They began to work together and renamed the band Alice in Chains. The two other bandmates were Mike Starr (bass) and Sean Kinney (drums). Columbia records signed Alice in Chains in \\\'89. Their first label, \\\"We Die Young\\\", was released in early 1990. Their debut was labeled \\\"Facelift\\\". The band toured their first release while opening for Van Halen, Poison, and Iggy Pop. Facelift went gold before the end of 1990. Alice in Chains released a mostly acoustic EP in \\\'91 called \\\"SAP\\\".
