Born in Phila. 1954. Put in ST.JOHN's orphanage at age six. Moved to St. Francis at age twelve. Left at age eighteen. Started playing alto sax at sixteen . Sold it for rent or food or something. Started playing harmonica soon after. When I played sax I learned by listening to a JOHN COLTRANE album. For the harp I learned the song ROOM TO MOVE on the TURNING POINT album by JOHN MAYALL. Add PAUL BUTTERFIELD, SONNY TERRY, and the SIEGEL SCHWALL BAND and I had some good albums to learn from. I did most of my showing off when I was younger and later I decided to try to be myself and add that to the songs I play on. I now like the harp better than the sax because I can play chords and single notes and truely change the sounds to something really differnt from everyone else. There are so many great harp players out there that most styles have been used up, so being original is a task in it self. |
