A Perfect Circle was formed by rock group, Tool’s, vocalist Maynard James Keenan and former Tool guitar technician, Billy Howerdel. The group, which is considered by critics to be an extension of Tool, actually is not. A Perfect Circle is less dark than Tool. The group focuses more on melodies and unusual instruments especially strings. A Perfect Circle’s main fan base consists of young intellectual college students. The group chose their name before the first show they played. They picked A Perfect Circle from a line out of one of their songs. The history of A Perfect Circle begins in 1996 when Tool released Aenima. During this time, Tool was experiencing difficulties with their former label; Freewood Entertainment.
